He was born to a Jewish family in Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian Empire. His main work, the novel Life and Fate, was confiscated in 1961 by the KGB, miraculously preserved, secretly exported on microfilm, and first published only in 1980 in Lausanne, Switzerland (edited by Shimon Markish and Yefim Etkind).
